This top of the table clash was ultimately decided by a series of penalty kicks converted unerringly
by the Widnes full back Owens, the visitors being worthy winners and crowned League Champions
despite only equalling Park’s three tries with their last attack of this close fought match.
The home side gained an early lead with a try from full back Pape after winning a scrum awarded
after their scrum half Smith was adjudged to have ben held up over the line.
The try was not converted, and shortly afterwards, despite the visitors converting a penalty from under
the posts Park increased their lead with a fine try after centre Basley’s break found stand off Rosney
who in turn found winger Littler to cross wide out.
West Park looked comfortable and in control as half time approached, but a wayward throw into a lineout
only 5 metres from the Widnes try line was snapped up , recycled at speed by the visitors to score a try in
the corner to bring the scores level at 10 points all at half time.
An injury to stand off Rosney , who had to be replaced, disrupted Park’s flow and soon after the restart the
visitors took the lead with a try wide out which went unconverted.
Park regained the lead when a quick tap penalty was finished off with a powerful burst from 20 metres by
prop Berry , converted from wide out by Holland to give the home side a slender two point lead.
West Park struggled to repeat their rhythm of the first half, and were architects of their own downfall conceding
three penalties in quick succession to give the visitors a 7 point advantage as the game moved into the last quarter.
Widnes showed good game management , and on the stroke of full time a clearance kick fortuitously bounced back
to be collected by the visitors to score a final try which went unconverted, and give them the League title which
their consistency throughout the season fully deserved.
Next week Park’s final game is a a re-arranged fixture at Heaton Moor, kick off 3pm
