Teams will not take pity on your loosing streak. It is down to you to climb yourself out of the hole and today the lads came with an attitude that they were going to right some wrongs in their defence evident over the last few weeks.
We hosted a Sefton side who are in the highest Lancs Waterfall League and a team who we have rarely beaten in the past. From the outset Sefton’s attack failed to put even a crack the defensive wall of West Park and from the very first to the last we transferred some textbook tackles from the training field into the game, with notable moments being Ellis’s cover tackling, Stretty’s head-on cruncher and Greeny’s blockbuster. In fact, the first try started from a bruising Coxy tackle dislodging the ball to allow quick turnover and turning defence into attack.
The forwards won this game by the way they absorbed the Sefton close play pressure by forcing mistakes with Fred, Sam, Billy the Fish & Luke setting a solid platform to turn defence into attack. The backs decided by how many with the devastating speed that we moved the ball across the line going forward, backed up by the ever supporting Joe, Alfie & Taylor. George ran the game adroitly, alert to opportunity and creating many of the overlaps; he even was ducking and weaving like a young Mike Tyson dodging and dummying at least 6 players when he backed himself and powered forward. Meadsy was throwing more dummies than when he was a baby in his pram and cleverly moved the ball into space to find a resurgent Ellis who made a number of strong mazy runs like a young gazelle. OwenD & Slim Shady’s speed and agility was simply too much for the opposition and were at times virtually unstoppable beating multiple men to run in a hand full of tries from some distance.
West Park continually asked questions of the Sefton defence by breaking up play with some well weighted cross kicks that were met with an enthused chase to drop on the ball creating tries for Ellis and taking OwenD up to an impressive 6 for the game. Hollywood burst into the line and shipped the ball well, showing you dont have to score tries to have a great game. Not to be overshadowed, the rumbustious forwards showed they have lightning speed too with Slamming Sam (AKA The Frog) tip-toeing down the blind side wing like a Dancing on Ice contestant and Luke charging over like a rhino to score a well deserved first try for WP. Fine contributions from Harrison and Pickle were also noted when they replaced the tiring forwards.
To add to the visitors problems, they had a player sent the sin-bin for ill discipline after the referee had warned Sefton about the number of penalties they were giving away in an attempt to frustrate the continuous pressure being applied in the ruck and tackle by the forwards. Special mention to Coxy who was integral in this by having his best game so far this season. We were delighted with the way the lads maintained their discipline by not rising to the bait and let our rugby do the talking.
The nill score was deserved and the fact Hollywood didn’t have to make one of his notable try saving tackles was testiment to the solid blanket defence in front of him. We hope to replicate and build on this performance as we hit a tough run of games in the weeks ahead.
Very well played today. The bar has now been set.
