West Park (St Helens) RFC
Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this double U.

Summertime went out with a bright sunny freezing day at the seaside i.e. a normal day at the beach.

Following in the footsteps of Man Utd Oy! Lake arrived late for their home game and kick off was delayed 13 minutes – unlucky for them.

In a frantic opening period the Lakers had early possession and being plastic scousers kicked it away three times, twice straight into touch. The first time Park had the ball after a line out the forwards drove it 15m upfield before Wild Bill fed Super Ten Matty Valo who floated past several defenders before crossing the line after a 65m break for a try. James Garner converted for a 7-0 lead.

Straight from the kick off Park took the ball in and lost it but the Lakers kicked it in touch. Park were completely unprepared and threw the ball in, lost it and Oy! Lake scored – 7-7.

A long break down the right by Corph and some inter-passing saw Phunt score on the right having come from the left wing – 12-7 to Park.

After 20 minutes Murray Mint was sin-binned for a late tackle and the Lakers started to gain in confidence, scoring 2 tries whilst Murray was in the bin for 15 minutes. Thankfully the ref blew up after the second try and said the Murray could return to the fray. Half Time Lakers winning 19-12

The second half saw the introduction of Merry Jerry and Park gained some structure with the pitch feeling narrower. A ghost try was converted for Valo for the game to be even again at 19-19. The game started to get interesting as the scousers were continually shouting at each other to use their feet to get Park players out – must come from their poor football skills. Unfortunately, as soon as a Park player did the same they lost it and the scouser jumped and threw an almighty slap for which he was told to apologise and promise not to do it again. From the penalty Big Ste drove it in and for what must be a first was penalised for not rolling away from the ball, to be fair nobody could see it.

The Lakers came straight back to take the lead 24-19 and Park were starting to struggle with injuries when touch judge / coach Tom the Pom scuttled off to put his kit on and join the fray for the last 15.

The ball started to flow freely for park as they realised they were facing defeat and direct running at the Lakers defence created space and Valo scored and converted for Park to take a 26-24 lead. Park didn’t let up and Adam N’Eve scored through a pile of bodies and Park ran out 33 – 24 winners. Candy Floss all round.
