West Park travelled down to Widnes a conurbation whose name is derived from the Danish for ‘wide nose’ which is probably not needed on this site of chemical toxicity founded on the waste from the Le Blanc process to make soda ash called Galligu. The Green and Gold were set to face the might French Vikings with big noses.
Park sneaked into Widnes via the Trojan Rabbit called Cronton. The pesky wide noses have for years built defences to keep people both in and out, the latest addition being a Gateway that charges the posh nobs from the Wirral and the Welsh to enter Widnes.
Park staggered out onto the pitch after pre-match inoculations supplied by the Orford Boys – “nudge, nudge, wink, wink say no more”. Widnes took the field in their obligatory Dennis the Menace shirts of alternate hooped black and red.
Local rivalry had both sides up for the challenge and the wide noses tore into Park putting them on the back foot. Sturdy defence resulted in the Widnes boys getting some more wide noses in a tough tussle. Park broke the deadlock and set the scene for the rest of the match when rampaging forward drives sucked in the wide nosed defence and fast interchanging in the backs resulted in Danny ‘The Price is Right’ scoring. In ability to control Pricey was to prove costly to Widnes.
Park kept to the proven tactics of recent weeks with short sharp attacks around the breakdown by Shylock, Led Boots, Bushwhacker Ned and Big Bad Bearded Barry and then when Murray Mint caught up with play they let him have a run around. Park scored further tries through Jolly Jim Watts and Orford Chris before Widnes in their haste to clear their line kicked the ball into the belly of Wild Bill, whilst everybody was wondering where the ball had gone Bill walked over the line and pulled the ball out of his belly button to score.
Widnes put up a fight and did score to show they can play rugby even against the mighty Green and Gold. The death knell rang for the wide noses when Marvellous Marve picked the ball up and did a ‘clean and jerk’ to cross the line. By the end it proved costly to Widnes that they couldn’t control Parks backs as Pricey crossed for 4 tries.
