West Park put together a great first half performance but had to cling on at the end as Southport showed why they were second in the league.
The game began with a good Southport try as the centre gave a brilliant cut out pass to find a pacey winger who went round the defence to score wide out. West Parks fatter backs left stunned. Conversion missed.
Park responded with a good try from Olly Belly as the forwards completed a great catch and drive which allowed Belly the space to flop over. The ground just about stopped trembling enough for McMahon to kick the goal.
Southport responded to this with a good penalty kick in windy conditions.
Park then regathered their own kick off and a good run from Belly allowed space for MOM Sam Thomson to crash over. McMahon missed the goal.
Unfortunately, Park lost Jonjo O'Neil to a serious knee injury and he had to be stretchered off. The green and golds had advantage at the time of the injury and from the penalty that restarted the match Olly Belly got into top gear and barged through the defence. The Southport players said this was an unfair play as they physically couldn't wrap their arms round Olly's midriff. Mcmahon kicked the goal.
Southport responded with a try and Park ended the half with a good Tom Speight try which McMahon successfully kicked.
26-13 at half time.
The second half was all Southport and West Park showed great defence but poor attack. Southport scored two trys but luckily didn't kick any goals leaving the game with a 3 point gap for the final 6 minutes. Park closed out the game with some excellent tackles but spending so much time defending left a negative feel to the overall game. It what was ultimately an excellent 1st half and a good win against tough opposition.
West Park would like to show their gratitude to the Southport coaching staff and team who helped Jonjo O'Neil off pitch following his injury. True sportmanship on show and they are a credit to their club.
The injury to O'Neil has sadly led to his retirement from rugby as he suffered a serious fracture to the knee and muscle damage.
He has been a brilliant ambassador for the Green and Gold at all levels and embodied the spirit of rugby union both on and off the field, we hope he stays involved in some other capacity even if it's just propping up the bar.
Luke McMahon should take note of what a real injury looks like. THE SOFT SOD!!!
