West Park finished this season with a flourish, crossing for five tries to gain maximum
league points, although unfortunately too late to challenge for what would have perhaps
been deserved League honours.
The visitors scored within seconds of the start of the game, quick hands across the field
reached flanker Winstanley whose adroit pass found will o’ the wisp winger Littler in support
to cross wide out, the attempted conversion by winger Holland hitting the post.
The home side converted a penalty and shortly afterwards took the lead with a try from winger
Reynolds, neatly converted by stand off Chatterton, which proved to be their final score of the game.
Two successful penalties by Holland saw the visitors retake the lead, further consolidated by a fine
try from scrum half Green after a break by Winstanley, duly converted by Holland, who then successfully
converted another penalty to give Park a comfortable 24 pts to 10 pts lead at the interval.
Soon into their stride again after the restart, a pass by flanker Cozens found winger Littler, whose inside
pass saw Winstanley again in support to finish off a fine inter-passing move with a try which Holland
converted. Winger Holland was having an excellent game with the boot, and was next in line to cross for
a try after a 30 metre run to the line , again landing the conversion.
The visitors continued to dominate in most phases of the game, and it was perhaps fitting that their captain ,
and often unsung but always industrious flanker Loughnane finished off another cross field move with the
fifth and final try of the season.
Park’s pack had to fight hard to maintain their superiority over larger opposition with an excellent team effort
in which flanker Cozens stood out as man of the match, even though their back line was outstanding in both
attack and defence.
Overall an excellent game played in good spirit, which bodes well for continued success next season.
