A disappointing end to what turned out to be a disappointing game. West park started the game with enthusiasm and no little vision. For the first 15 minutes they were camped in the opposition 22 with no result. After sustained pressure, several penalties awarded and a yellow card presented to an opposition player, Lee Rosney crossed the line for the opening try after some fluent passing amongst the backs.
It was, however, too early to celebrate as Oldham worked their way up the field. A resulting drive led to their first try which was unconverted. Oldham were now warming to the task and scored another try under the posts following a rolling maul , quick ball to the centre Roscoe who ran a lovely angle to touch down. This try was converted.
Matters turned even more against West Park when Cozens, playing an unaccustomed second row position, was shown a red card and made his way miserably to the touchline. It is fair to say that the referee was playing a more and more active part in the game and he demonstrated this even more when shortly before half time he showed a yellow card to the opposition Hooker. Just on half time the West Park Scrum half, Littler, was thwarted when knocking on just short of the Oldham line.
West Park started the second half promisingly enough when young winger, Thomson, scored in the corner following a mazy run from Lee Rosney. Again the try was unconverted. Things were looking up for Park when, following clever play from Rosney and interpassing between the backs full-back Pape scored in the corner. Try was unconverted.
Shortly afterwards Oldham were awarded yet another penalty which was converted to level the scores at 15-15. Oldham struck again shortly before the final whistle when following a scrum close to the West park line the opposition scrum half touched down under the posts. The try was converted.
West Park could use the excuse that several regular first team players were missing but that did not explain the lack of enthusiasm and endeavour from those remaining. It is a fact that the squad appeared to be more fit at the beginning of the season than they do now.
Next week West Park play away at Tyldesley in a cup game, kick off at 2.15p.m.
