In a good and often exciting contest, the visitors came up against a rejuvenated and re-assembled
LSH team that ultimately proved too strong and resilient to defeat.
Whilst West Park attacked and defended admirably, in the final analysis they were tactically
outplayed, though not helped by receiving two yellow cards and being on the wrong end of a
puzzling penalty count.
Though opening the score early in the game through winger Holland’s neat interception and
50 metre race to the line , the home side also crossed for a try which was not however converted.
The visitors then added to their score with a try from centre Green after good work by fellow centre
Hill, again converted by Holland.
A close range and trademark try from LSH scrum half Wilson narrowed the gap to two points, but Park then
reduced to 14 men conceded another try to give the home side a 3 point advantage. Despite their shortfall
in players and the loss of playmaker Rosney to injury, the visitors showed excellent resolve and determination,
and after good work by the backs regained the lead as winger Ainsworth squeezed in at the corner,
giving them a slender half time lead of 19 pts to 17 pts.
In the second half another close range try from scrum half Wilson, easily converted by Lee Holland
gave back the the lead back to the home side, but once again the visitors were reduced to 14 men
and thus unable to adequately defend a 5 metre scrum which subsequently led to another try, albeit
not converted but stretching the home side’s lead to 10 points.
With little good and too often wasted possession , Park nonetheless continued to chase the game,
and were rewarded when their young flanker Winstanley hacked on a ball in broken play to gather
and score a try , leaving only 3 points between the teams with only 15 minutes or so remaining.
Finally the strength and guile of the home side proved too much for the visitors who conceded two
further tries to put the result beyond doubt, though their front row forwards and flankers can be
well satisfied with their defensive efforts in particular.
Unfortunately West Park have no fixture next week.
