This top of the table clash proved as expected a tight affair, with the home side snatching a draw
with the a penalty which proved to be the last kick of the game.
The visitors were dominant in all phases in the first 20 mins of the match, showing some excellent
flowing rugby. Good defence however by Didsbury limited Park to only one try, as an incisive move across
the back line, and a fine run by winger Ainsworth provided a try to his supporting centre Hill, which
went unconverted.
West Park might have thought themselves unlucky not the be further ahead on the scoreboard, but a
successful penalty and an unconverted try from a 5 metre scrum provided the home team with an
unlikely lead.
Now playing with much more confidence and belief Didsbury increased their lead with a 2nd albeit
unconverted try, resulting from a series of forward drives aided by poor defensive tackling.
The visitors were at last shaken out of their lethargy, and on the stoke of half time scored an excellent
2nd try after a telling break by centre Green, and inter-passing amongst the backs provided winger
Holland with the opportunity to finish with a try, albeit again unconverted.
The half time score of 13 pts to 10 pts reflected the closeness of the contest, but soon after the restart
the home side further benefited from more indecisive tackling by the visitors to cross for another try
which was easily converted from under the posts.
West Park at last picked up the pace, and series of good moves between backs and forwards allowed
winger Holland to find space and feed supporting centre Green for a try wide out which Holland expertly
converted. The visitors drew level with a penalty and as the game drew to a close edged ahead with
another from Holland, only to be denied a win and deserved victory at the death.
Next week West Park entertain Heaton Moor, and should perhaps look to provide greater energy and
concentration throughout the game if they are to add to this season’s continuing success.
