Widnes RUFC
West Park (St Helens) RFC

Widnes 1st XV 5 pts V West Park 1st XV 31pts

West Park opened the new league season with an impressive and subsequently emphatic win
against a strong and resolute Widnes side.

Despite determined work by the visitor’s pack, it was their backs that proved the decisive factor,
accredited with all four tries, each expertly converted by centre Jack Holland, who also added a
successful penalty kick to his personal tally.

Scrum half Ryan Littler was the architect of Park’s first two tries, taking a quick tap penalty to beat the defence and score himself, then repeating the move on the half hour mark getting the ball via
several pairs of hands to the ever-supporting full back John Pape to score the try.

Widnes were however then reduced to 14 men with the referee issuing a red card for a dangerous tip tackle,
taking the half time score to 14 points to nil. The try of the match followed almost immediately after the re-start, as fly half Lee Rosney intercepted
a Widnes pass and outpaced the defence in a fully 75 metre sprint to the line to score.

The home side continued to prove resilient and as an air of complacency overcame the visitors Widnes
forwards re-cycled the ball to engineer a try wide out, which was unable to be converted.
As the game drew to a close an excellent break by 2nd row Lewis Harris was carried on by Rosney who
once again found Pape in support to register his second try which was converted by Holland, who completed
the scoring with a successful penalty kick .

This was a good all round display by West Park who entertain Tyldesley at Red Rocks next Saturday kick off 3 pm.
